Mullins Food Products: A Look Back & Oh The Places We'll Go

Mullins Private Label Sauce Manufacturer Groundbreaking

Since being founded in 1934, we have called many places ‘home’.  The original Mullins tavern was located at 22 S. Kostner Avenue, on Chicago’s west side.  Sauces were made there in small amounts for the bar patrons and some local grocery chains.  In 1944, in order to focus on our growing sauce production endeavor, we moved the sauce company to 4022-26 W. Lake Street, located adjacent to the “El” tracks.  For the locals of Chicago, the sound of the "El" is one that you'll never forget if you live or work nearby.  Eventually, Mullins Food Products acquired a sauce packaging company to expand our product lines beyond retail, and into service of QSR restaurants, distribution chains, and the liquid products foodservice industry.  This new strategy would require facility expansion, which was not feasible in the Lake Street location.

In the mid-1970’s, Jack Mullins made the decision to move to suburban Broadview, renting space in a building at 2759 S. 25th Avenue.  With the customer base growing, including many private label brands, Mullins Food Products continued to acquire space in the rented building.  It became clear that our growth was outpacing what this facility could provide.  Jack & Joan Mullins recognized it was time to construct a state of the art facility, and accelerate towards their goal of being the premier custom sauce manufacturing and packaging company.

Mullins Food Products purchased a vacant building formerly occupied by Ceco Steel and arranged for demolition; preparing to become the most reliable ketchup, sauce, mayonnaise, and dressing supplier in the world!

In March of 1985, Mullins Food Products broke ground and began construction of the building we reside in today.  Since that historic day in company history, we have expanded multiple times and now own all of the property and adjacent buildings at the corner of 25th Avenue and Roosevelt Road, allowing for future expansion and growth opportunities.  We are privileged to share this corner of Broadview with wonderful neighbors since the Broadview Police and Fire Departments are directly next to our facility.

To quote Dr. Seuss, and share how we feel about the vision and growth of Mullins Food Products going from good to great:

“You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

And will you succeed?

Yes! You will indeed!

(98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)”
