Mullins Food Products is proud to have earned the highest possible rating from the BRC National Food Safety Audit, AA. This exemplary rating motivates our team to continue revealing menu trends and making tasty sauces in our pristine manufacturing facility. Mullins Food Products exceeds the federal standards for food safety, but why did these standards ever come about and why are they important for consumers?
With groundbreaking technologies and the advent of hugely expedient food production in the early 20th century, Congress decided it needed to regulate what its citizens were consuming. The 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act (notably passed a few months following the release of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle) forbade the sale of misleading or falsely labeled packaged or canned foods and unadulterated foods. Although certainly lacking in many areas, the Act formed the basis of modern food safety standards in the United States by stipulating that food vendors sell exactly what they promise. The body that oversaw implementation of the Act and researched and regulated food providers, soon turned into the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA became more of what it is today in the late 1930s when Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act into law.
As technologies have changed and become more modern, government involvement in food production processes has expanded and adapted to ensure its citizens have safe consumption experiences. The 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is considered to be the first major food safety legislation in 80 years and gives the FDA more regulatory power, including mandatory recall authority. This is an added safeguard for consumers.
